Veld and Wildfire Emergency Management for Rural and Industrial Sites

Runaway veld and bush fires threaten farms, plantations, mines and rural communities across Southern and East Africa every dry season, often reaching industrial sites with little warning. This course prepares organisations to prevent, detect and fight vegetation fires and to protect people, livestock and assets. Delegates learn firebreak management, early warning, suppression tactics and community coordination suited to remote settings.

What you will be able to do

  • Assess veld and wildfire risk across a site using fire danger indices and vegetation surveys.
  • Plan and maintain firebreaks, buffer zones and defensible space around buildings and stockpiles.
  • Coordinate early detection, spotting and reporting to trigger a rapid organised response.
  • Direct safe suppression tactics for ground crews using beaters, water and mobile units.
  • Establish mutual aid arrangements with fire protection associations and neighbouring landowners.
  • Manage evacuation of workers, livestock and communities when a fire cannot be contained.
