Emergency Preparedness and Evacuation Planning

Every workplace needs people who know what to do in the first four minutes of a fire, gas release or structural failure. Delegates practise evacuation planning, assembly point control and roll call under the duties set out in the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993.

What you will be able to do

  • Explain the emergency preparedness duties placed on employers and appointed persons by the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993.
  • Draw up an evacuation plan that accounts for shift patterns, visitors and staff with mobility limitations.
  • Appoint, brief and rotate floor marshals so that cover survives leave and resignations.
  • Run a roll call at an assembly point and account for missing persons within a defined time.
  • Plan and debrief an evacuation drill so that findings lead to changes in the plan.
  • Coordinate handover to municipal fire services and emergency medical responders on arrival.
