Structural Collapse and Urban Search and Rescue Coordination

Building collapses, gas explosions and disasters in dense African cities trap people under rubble and demand a fast, disciplined and safe rescue response. This course prepares emergency coordinators to organise and support urban search and rescue operations after a structural collapse. Delegates learn scene assessment, hazard control, victim location and the incident command structures needed to coordinate rescue teams, medical services and heavy equipment safely.

  • Assess a structural collapse scene and its hazards to responders.
  • Establish incident command and control over a collapse rescue operation.
  • Coordinate search, victim location and rescue in a safe sequence.
  • Manage hazards such as unstable structures, utilities and secondary collapse.
