Search and Screening Operations for Building Access Points

Access point search and screening is the first line of defence at malls, offices, mines and government buildings, yet officers are often deployed with little structured training. This course develops confident, lawful and courteous searching of people, bags and vehicles, including the correct use of walk through and handheld metal detectors. Delegates practise techniques that balance thoroughness with the dignity of visitors and the constitutional limits on searches in African jurisdictions.

What you will be able to do

  • Conduct lawful and respectful searches of persons, bags and vehicles at access points.
  • Operate walk through arches and handheld detectors and interpret their alerts correctly.
  • Recognise concealment methods for weapons, contraband and stolen goods.
  • Manage queues and screening throughput without compromising thoroughness.
  • Apply the legal limits on searches and the rights of the person being searched.
  • Escalate and document refusals, seizures and suspicious findings.
