Patient Records and Health Information Governance

Patient files sit in open registry shelves, messaging groups carry ward handovers, and medical scheme queries arrive daily. The Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013 treats health information as a special category, and health facilities carry the consequences. Records governance, retention, access control and breach response.

What you will be able to do

  • Classify patient information and apply the special personal information rules under the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013.
  • Design a retention and disposal schedule covering clinical and administrative records.
  • Control access to patient records across registry, wards, billing and scheme correspondence.
  • Respond to access and correction requests from patients within lawful timeframes.
  • Investigate and report a security compromise involving patient information.
  • Assess the risks created by messaging apps, personal devices and shared mailboxes in clinical areas.
