Hazardous Materials Emergency Response and Spill Control

Fuel, acids, gases and process chemicals move through South African plants, depots and roads every day, and a release can injure workers, close a site and contaminate water sources. This course prepares emergency responders to recognise a hazardous materials incident, protect people and contain a spill within their level of training. It stresses working safely within capability and knowing when to withdraw and escalate.

What you will be able to do

  • Recognise hazardous materials using labels, placards and safety data sheets.
  • Assess a release incident for hazards to people, property and the environment.
  • Establish zones, cordons and safe approach directions at an incident.
  • Select and use protective equipment appropriate to the substance and role.
  • Apply containment, absorption and control tactics within the responder level.
  • Coordinate decontamination, escalation and reporting to authorities.
