Fire Risk Assessment and Fire Safety Management

Fires in warehouses, informal settlements bordering industrial land and ageing commercial buildings remain a leading cause of business interruption and loss of life in South Africa. Delegates learn to conduct a structured fire risk assessment, specify detection and suppression systems, manage housekeeping and hot work permits, and build a fire safety programme that satisfies the Occupational Health and Safety Act and municipal fire department requirements.

What you will be able to do

  • Conduct a fire risk assessment that ranks ignition sources, fuel loads and escape routes by severity.
  • Specify fire detection, alarm and suppression systems appropriate to the occupancy and budget.
  • Manage housekeeping, storage and hot work permit systems that reduce accidental ignition.
  • Coordinate with municipal fire departments on access, hydrant testing and pre incident planning.
  • Train fire teams and floor wardens to use extinguishers and hose reels safely.
  • Maintain fire safety records and corrective action registers that demonstrate ongoing compliance.
