Community Disaster Risk Management and Resilience Planning

Floods, droughts, fires and disease outbreaks hit African communities hardest where preparedness is weakest and coordination between agencies is thin. This course helps disaster management practitioners assess local hazards, plan for likely disasters and build community resilience before events occur. Participants learn to run risk assessments, prepare response plans and coordinate the government, community and non governmental actors who must work together when disaster strikes.

What you will be able to do

  • Assess the hazards, exposure and vulnerability facing a community or district.
  • Prioritise disaster risks and plan reduction measures before events occur.
  • Prepare response and contingency plans for the most likely disasters.
  • Strengthen community resilience through preparedness and early warning.
  • Coordinate government, community and non governmental disaster actors.
  • Review response after events to improve future readiness.
