Business Resilience and Disaster Risk Reduction

Floods in KwaZulu Natal, wildfires in the Western Cape and prolonged power and water outages have all forced South African organisations to rebuild operations from scratch with little notice. This course applies disaster risk reduction principles to business operations, covering hazard mapping, resilience investment, mutual aid arrangements and recovery planning that goes beyond a single crisis to build lasting organisational resilience.

What you will be able to do

  • Map natural and infrastructure hazards that could disrupt a specific site or supply chain.
  • Quantify the cost of resilience investment against the likely cost of prolonged disruption.
  • Negotiate mutual aid and shared resource arrangements with neighbouring businesses or industry bodies.
  • Design a recovery plan that restores critical operations in a defined sequence after a disaster.
  • Coordinate with municipal disaster management centres during a declared local or provincial disaster.
  • Embed resilience thinking into ongoing investment and site planning decisions after recovery.
