Water Inrush and Old Workings Hazard Management in Underground Mines

Addresses the potentially catastrophic risk of water and mud inrush from old workings, aquifers and flooded areas in underground mining. Delegates learn how to identify inrush hazards, plan precautionary boreholes and barriers, and control mining near flooded or abandoned workings. The programme reflects inrush risks present in older Southern African mining districts.

What you will be able to do

  • Identify inrush hazards from old workings, aquifers and dams.
  • Interpret plans and survey data to locate flooded or abandoned areas.
  • Plan precautionary drilling, barriers and standoff distances.
  • Establish safe mining procedures near water bearing ground.
  • Recognise warning signs preceding water and mud inrush.
  • Prepare inrush emergency response and escape planning.
