Mine Ventilation and Environmental Engineering

Heat, dust and flammable gas behave differently at three kilometres below surface than they do in a textbook. Delegates study airflow distribution, ventilation network design, refrigeration practice and gas monitoring in deep level gold and platinum operations, along with the ventilation records an inspector will ask to see.

What you will be able to do

  • Calculate airflow requirements for development ends, stopes and workshop areas.
  • Interpret ventilation network models and pressure quantity survey results.
  • Design ventilation controls including doors, stoppings, brattices and auxiliary fan installations.
  • Assess heat load and select cooling and refrigeration strategies for deep operations.
  • Monitor methane, carbon monoxide and diesel particulate matter against occupational limits.
  • Prepare ventilation layouts, standards and records that withstand statutory scrutiny.
