Ground Control and Strata Management in Underground Mines

Falls of ground remain one of the largest causes of death in South African underground mining. Rock mass classification, support design and installation quality, seismicity in deep level operations, and the entry examination routine that decides whether a working place is safe to enter.

What you will be able to do

  • Classify rock mass conditions and recognise the failure modes each condition produces.
  • Apply support design principles to stopes, gullies, development ends and travelling ways.
  • Audit support installation quality against the approved code of practice.
  • Interpret seismic monitoring output and apply exclusion and re-entry protocols.
  • Conduct entry examinations, barring down and making safe to a consistent standard.
  • Investigate fall of ground incidents and revise ground control measures accordingly.
