Underground Refuge Bays and Escape Route Management

When an underground emergency strikes, survival often depends on well maintained refuge bays and clearly managed escape routes. This programme helps mine teams design, provision and audit refuge bays and second outlets so that workers can shelter or self escape with confidence. Content draws on evacuation lessons learned from Southern African underground operations.

What you will be able to do

  • Specify refuge bay location, capacity and life support provisioning.
  • Manage escape routes and second outlets for reliable self escape.
  • Inspect and audit refuge bays against readiness standards.
  • Coordinate refuge bay use within the wider emergency response plan.
  • Train workers to reach and use refuge bays under emergency conditions.
  • Maintain records that demonstrate ongoing refuge bay readiness.
