Transport Depot and Yard Layout Planning

Teaches planners and depot managers how to design vehicle depots and yards that flow smoothly and safely. Covers parking layouts, fuelling and washbay placement, workshop access and the movement of vehicles, pedestrians and cargo through a constrained site. Focuses on practical improvements that reduce congestion, damage and turnaround delays at African transport depots.

What you will be able to do

  • Assess an existing depot layout for congestion, safety and turnaround problems.
  • Plan parking, fuelling, washbay and workshop zones for efficient vehicle flow.
  • Separate vehicle, pedestrian and cargo movement to reduce incidents on site.
  • Size gate, marshalling and holding areas to match peak vehicle volumes.
  • Design signage, road markings and one way routing for a safe yard.
  • Develop a staged plan to upgrade a depot with limited space and budget.
