Tailings Storage Facility Management and Dam Safety

Tailings dams fail slowly and then all at once, usually with warning signs that somebody recorded and nobody acted on. Deposition planning, water balance and freeboard control, instrumentation data, closure obligations, and the reporting lines that connect a dam wall to the board.

What you will be able to do

  • Describe tailings deposition methods and the failure mechanisms associated with each.
  • Manage water balance, freeboard, decant and return water systems through wet seasons.
  • Read piezometer, settlement and seepage data and identify adverse trends early.
  • Set inspection routines and trigger action response plans for a residue facility.
  • Address community, dust and groundwater impacts around residue deposits.
  • Structure accountability, assurance reviews and board level reporting for tailings risk.
