Shaft Sinking and Vertical Development Safety

Prepares mine officials and project teams to manage the elevated hazards of shaft sinking and vertical development on South African and wider African mining projects. The programme covers kibble operations, fall of ground control, blasting in confined vertical workings and the coordination of contractors working in one of the most dangerous phases of mine development.

What you will be able to do

  • Identify the principal hazards associated with shaft sinking and vertical development.
  • Plan safe kibble and stage operations for personnel and material movement.
  • Control fall of ground and water ingress risks in sinking operations.
  • Coordinate blasting and mucking cycles safely in vertical workings.
  • Manage specialist sinking contractors and their safety obligations.
  • Compile emergency response arrangements specific to shaft sinking.
