Scope 3 and Value Chain Emissions Accounting

For most African companies the largest share of emissions sits outside their own walls, in purchased goods, transport, product use and other value chain activities. This course tackles the practical challenge of measuring these Scope 3 emissions where supplier data is patchy and estimation is unavoidable. Delegates learn to build a defensible value chain inventory and engage suppliers to improve it over time.

What you will be able to do

  • Explain the fifteen Scope 3 categories and how they differ from direct emissions.
  • Screen the value chain to identify material emissions categories.
  • Apply spend based, activity based and supplier specific estimation methods.
  • Source and assess emission factors suitable for African supply chains.
  • Engage suppliers to improve data quality and reduce upstream emissions.
  • Compile and document a Scope 3 inventory that can support reporting and targets.
