Scanning Electron Microscopy and Nanomaterials Characterisation

This programme introduces scanning electron microscopy and associated elemental microanalysis for imaging and characterising surfaces, particles and nanomaterials in materials science, mining and manufacturing laboratories. Delegates learn imaging modes, specimen preparation and elemental mapping, and how to interpret micrographs with confidence.

What you will be able to do

  • Describe how scanning electron microscopes form and detect images.
  • Prepare conductive and non conductive specimens for imaging.
  • Select imaging modes and settings for different sample questions.
  • Perform elemental analysis using energy dispersive spectroscopy.
  • Characterise particle morphology, coatings and surface features.
  • Interpret micrographs and elemental maps for reporting.
