Rock Winch and Scraper Operations Safety for Underground Crews

Provides practical safety training for rock winch and scraper operations used to clean and transport broken rock in narrow reef and conventional underground mines across Southern Africa. Participants learn safe rigging, snatch block positioning and the discipline needed to avoid rope, sheave and line of fire injuries. The programme reflects the hazards of one of the most common yet underestimated underground activities.

What you will be able to do

  • Identify the hazards of rock winch, rope and scraper operations.
  • Rig winches, snatch blocks and anchors correctly for safe scraping.
  • Position operators and crew clear of rope and line of fire zones.
  • Inspect ropes, sheaves and winch equipment for defects.
  • Apply safe signalling and communication during scraping operations.
  • Respond to rope failure, fouling and equipment malfunction safely.
