Records and Information Governance for Municipalities

This course addresses the management of records, information and data within municipalities, covering the National Archives and Records Service Act, POPIA compliance, records classification, retention schedules and the transition from paper-based to electronic document management systems. Participants leave with practical tools for organising municipal records so that information can be retrieved quickly for audits, legal matters and public access requests.

What you will be able to do

  • Explain the legislative requirements governing records management in South African municipalities.
  • Apply POPIA principles when collecting, storing and disposing of personal information.
  • Classify municipal records according to an approved file plan and retention schedule.
  • Design a transition plan from paper-based to electronic document management systems.
  • Respond to Promotion of Access to Information Act requests within statutory timeframes.
  • Prepare municipal records for audit, legal discovery or council enquiry.
