Protection Relay Testing and Commissioning

Protection relays guard African power networks and plant electrical systems, isolating faults before they cause fires, outages and equipment loss. When relays are wrongly set or untested, they either fail to operate or trip needlessly. This programme builds practical competence in testing, setting and commissioning protection relays so that electrical systems are protected and coordinated.

What you will be able to do

  • Explain the role of protection relays in isolating electrical faults.
  • Interpret protection settings and grading for coordinated operation.
  • Use secondary injection test equipment to verify relay operation.
  • Test common protection functions such as overcurrent, earth fault and differential.
  • Diagnose incorrect operation and wiring or setting errors.
  • Commission and document protection schemes for safe energisation.
