Pillar Extraction and Secondary Mining Safety

Addresses the elevated fall of ground and stability risks of pillar extraction and secondary mining in previously developed bord and pillar workings. Delegates learn extraction sequencing, remnant pillar assessment, support strategies and controlled retreat to manage roof and pillar collapse risk. The programme draws on Southern African coal and hard rock secondary mining experience.

What you will be able to do

  • Assess remnant pillar condition and stability before extraction.
  • Plan safe pillar extraction and retreat sequences.
  • Select support and monitoring for high risk extraction areas.
  • Recognise warning signs of pillar run and roof instability.
  • Apply exclusion and clearance controls during extraction.
  • Coordinate teams and equipment for controlled retreat mining.
