Non-Revenue Water Reduction and Water Loss Management

This course tackles one of the biggest financial and resource drains facing African municipalities: water that is produced but never billed. Participants learn to build a water balance, distinguish physical leakage from commercial losses, and implement pressure management, active leak detection and metering interventions. The programme links water loss reduction directly to municipal revenue, drought resilience and the sustainability of water services.

What you will be able to do

  • Compile a standard water balance and calculate non revenue water for a supply zone.
  • Separate physical losses from commercial and apparent losses.
  • Design district metered areas and interpret minimum night flow data.
  • Implement pressure management and active leak detection programmes.
  • Address meter under registration, illegal use and billing gaps that inflate losses.
  • Build a costed water loss reduction plan with measurable targets.
