Municipal Occupational Health, Safety and Employee Wellness

This course builds a practical occupational health and safety and employee wellness capability tailored to the diverse workforce of a municipality, from office staff to water, electricity, waste and cemetery crews. Participants learn to assess workplace hazards across these functions, meet legal duties as an employer, and run wellness programmes that reduce absenteeism. The programme reflects the African local government reality of high risk field work, ageing plant and stretched health and safety resources.

What you will be able to do

  • Explain the municipality's legal duties as an employer for occupational health and safety.
  • Assess hazards across municipal functions such as water, electricity, waste and roads.
  • Establish health and safety committees, representatives and reporting systems.
  • Investigate incidents and implement corrective and preventive actions.
  • Design employee wellness programmes that address absenteeism and chronic illness.
