Mine Electrical Safety and Explosion Protected Equipment

Develops practical understanding of electrical hazards, isolation and explosion protected equipment used in South African underground and surface mines. Participants cover flameproof enclosures, earth leakage protection, safe isolation and the inspection routines that prevent electrical ignitions and electrocution in demanding mining environments.

What you will be able to do

  • Describe the electrical hazards present in mining and mineral processing.
  • Apply safe isolation and lockout procedures for mining electrical equipment.
  • Explain the principles of flameproof and intrinsically safe equipment.
  • Inspect explosion protected enclosures for integrity and compliance.
  • Verify earth leakage and earth continuity protection on mine circuits.
  • Investigate electrical incidents and recommend preventive measures.
