Microbiology Laboratory Testing and Control

Microbiological testing protects water supplies, food products and industrial processes from contamination risk. This course covers aseptic technique, culture media preparation, common enumeration and detection methods, and contamination control practices used in South African water, food and industrial microbiology laboratories, giving staff the skills to produce reliable and defensible microbiological results.

What you will be able to do

  • Explain the principles of aseptic technique and contamination control.
  • Prepare culture media and reagents to required specifications.
  • Perform common enumeration methods including membrane filtration and plate counts.
  • Identify indicator organisms relevant to water and process monitoring.
  • Apply incubation and reading procedures that produce reliable microbiological results.
  • Recognise sources of contamination and false results in microbiology testing.
