Making Safe, Barring Down and Entry Examination for Underground Crews

Develops the daily making safe routines that protect underground crews from fall of ground at the start of and during each shift. Delegates learn systematic entry examination, sounding and barring down techniques, and the discipline of never working under unsupported ground. The course reflects the workplace routines expected at Southern African underground mines.

What you will be able to do

  • Perform systematic entry examinations of the working place.
  • Apply sounding techniques to identify loose and hazardous ground.
  • Bar down loose rock safely using correct tools and body position.
  • Confirm support adequacy before allowing work to proceed.
  • Record making safe activities and hazardous ground findings.
  • Escalate conditions beyond the crew's authority to make safe.
