Laboratory Safety and Chemical Handling

Addresses the safe handling, storage and disposal of chemicals and hazardous substances in industrial, water, mining and petrochemical laboratories. Covers hazard identification, personal protective equipment, spill response and emergency procedures suited to laboratories operating under varied infrastructure and resource conditions across Africa, reducing avoidable exposure and workplace incidents.

What you will be able to do

  • Identify chemical hazard classes and interpret safety data sheets correctly.
  • Select and use personal protective equipment appropriate to each task.
  • Store and segregate chemicals according to compatibility and hazard class.
  • Respond to chemical spills, exposures and other laboratory emergencies.
  • Dispose of laboratory waste and hazardous chemicals responsibly.
  • Conduct routine safety inspections and near miss reporting in the laboratory.
