Interest Rate and Derivative Risk Management for Corporates

Corporate borrowers exposed to floating South African and regional interest rates often carry unhedged risk without a formal policy to guide the decision. This course explains interest rate swaps, caps, collars and forward rate agreements in practical terms, and shows treasury teams how to build a hedging policy, obtain board approval and account for derivatives correctly.

What you will be able to do

  • Quantify a company's exposure to floating interest rate movements.
  • Compare interest rate swaps, caps, collars and forward rate agreements as hedging tools.
  • Draft a treasury hedging policy that defines acceptable instruments and limits.
  • Assess counterparty credit risk on derivative transactions.
  • Apply hedge accounting principles under IFRS 9 to interest rate derivatives.
  • Present hedging strategy and outcomes to the board and audit committee.
