Household and Municipal Solid Waste Management

Growing African cities are struggling with rising volumes of household and municipal waste, overflowing dumpsites and informal disposal. This programme covers the practical planning of collection, transfer, recycling and disposal systems that work within real budget and capacity limits. Delegates learn to design services, engage communities and integrate the informal reclaimers who already sustain much of the sector.

What you will be able to do

  • Characterise household and municipal waste streams and their growth.
  • Plan collection, transfer and route systems for a service area.
  • Design recycling, separation and diversion programmes that fit local capacity.
  • Manage disposal sites to reduce environmental and health impacts.
  • Integrate informal reclaimers into a formal waste system.
  • Engage communities to improve separation and reduce illegal dumping.
