Heat Stress and Thermal Management in Deep Level Mines

Addresses the serious heat stress risks faced by workers in South Africa's deep level gold and platinum mines, where virgin rock temperatures and humidity threaten worker health. The programme covers heat tolerance screening, acclimatisation, cooling strategies and the monitoring needed to prevent heat stroke and protect a productive workforce.

What you will be able to do

  • Explain how heat and humidity affect worker health in deep mines.
  • Measure thermal conditions using wet bulb and related indices.
  • Implement acclimatisation and heat tolerance screening programmes.
  • Apply engineering cooling and ventilation controls to reduce heat load.
  • Recognise and respond to signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
  • Develop workplace procedures for managing thermal stress by section.
