Grid Scale Battery Energy Storage System Maintenance

Battery energy storage is being deployed rapidly across African grids to firm up renewable supply and manage load shedding. Maintaining these large lithium based systems safely calls for skills that differ from conventional battery banks. This programme covers the inspection, thermal management, fire risk control and software driven health checks that keep containerised storage systems performing across their service life.

What you will be able to do

  • Describe the components of a grid scale battery energy storage system and how they connect to the grid.
  • Interpret battery management system data to assess cell health and state of charge balance.
  • Inspect thermal management, ventilation and enclosure systems for safe operation.
  • Apply lithium specific fire prevention and emergency response measures during maintenance.
  • Carry out scheduled checks on inverters, switchgear and protection within the storage system.
  • Plan capacity testing and degradation tracking across the asset life.
