Gearbox and Power Transmission Maintenance

Gearboxes, belts, chains and couplings transmit power across almost every plant, and their failure usually stops a whole line rather than a single machine. This programme helps maintenance staff understand how power transmission components wear and fail, and how to inspect, adjust and service them before a small defect becomes a major breakdown. Examples are drawn from conveyors, mills and processing equipment common on South African sites.

What you will be able to do

  • Describe the main types of gears, couplings, belts and chains used in industry.
  • Identify wear patterns and failure modes on gear teeth and transmission components.
  • Inspect and adjust belt and chain drives for correct tension and alignment.
  • Apply correct lubrication practice for enclosed gearboxes and open gearing.
  • Diagnose noise, heat and vibration symptoms in power transmission systems.
  • Plan servicing intervals that match duty and operating conditions.
