Electricity Distribution and Prepaid Metering Management for Municipalities

This course focuses on the operation of municipal electricity distribution as both a service and a major revenue stream. Participants learn to manage the reticulation network, reduce technical and non technical losses, and run prepaid and conventional metering systems that protect income. The programme addresses pressing African challenges including meter tampering, illegal connections, bulk purchase debt to the national utility and the impact of load shedding on municipal supply.

What you will be able to do

  • Explain the municipal electricity distribution mandate and the bulk supply relationship with the national utility.
  • Quantify technical and non technical losses and design a loss reduction programme.
  • Manage prepaid and conventional metering, vending and revenue protection systems.
  • Detect and respond to meter tampering, bypassing and illegal connections.
  • Plan network maintenance, refurbishment and capacity upgrades within budget limits.
