Electrical Safety, Isolation and Lockout for Plant Teams

Isolation goes wrong when the paperwork and the physical switching tell different stories. Lockout and tagout discipline, arc flash awareness, live work rules and the extra risk that load shedding and generator changeover bring to plant: what electrical and maintenance teams do before anyone touches a panel.

What you will be able to do

  • Apply a complete isolation sequence covering identification, switching, locking, testing for dead and earthing where required.
  • Write and issue permits to work and safe work procedures that match the plant actually in front of the team.
  • Recognise arc flash and shock risk in switchgear, motor control centres and distribution boards.
  • Manage group isolation on multi trade shutdowns where several teams lock onto the same equipment.
  • Handle the hazards created by load shedding, generator changeover and backfeed from standby sources.
  • Investigate a near miss involving stored energy and close out the control gaps it exposes.

Who should attend

Electricians, artisans, electrical supervisors, maintenance foremen and technicians working on plant, mining or municipal electrical equipment. Also suited to safety officers and permit issuing authorities who authorise isolation.
