Defensive and Advanced Driving Skills for Professional Drivers

Builds practical defensive and advanced driving judgement for professional drivers operating on African roads, where mixed traffic, pedestrians, livestock, potholes and poorly lit corridors raise real risk. The programme develops hazard anticipation, safe following distances, night driving discipline and controlled responses to blowouts and skids. It is grounded in the everyday conditions that cause the most serious crashes on regional highways and township routes.

What you will be able to do

  • Anticipate road hazards early using systematic observation and scanning techniques.
  • Apply safe following distances, braking and cornering for loaded heavy vehicles.
  • Manage high risk conditions such as rain, dust, fog and unlit night corridors.
  • Respond correctly to tyre blowouts, brake fade, skids and mechanical failures.
  • Reduce fuel burn and vehicle wear through smooth, planned driving habits.
  • Complete a personal driving risk self assessment and improvement plan.
