Crude Oil and Hydrocarbon Quality Control

Refineries, terminals and gas plants in South Africa depend on accurate crude oil and hydrocarbon testing to control custody transfer, blending and product quality decisions. This course covers key physical and chemical test methods for crude oil, distillates and gas products, sampling practices that avoid bias, and the quality control checks that protect laboratories from costly measurement disputes.

What you will be able to do

  • Explain key physical and chemical properties used to characterise crude oil and hydrocarbon products.
  • Perform standard test methods for density, viscosity, distillation and vapour pressure.
  • Apply correct sampling techniques that minimise bias in custody transfer measurements.
  • Identify sources of error in hydrocarbon testing and their impact on commercial decisions.
  • Implement quality control checks that detect drift in physical property testing.
  • Resolve measurement disputes using traceable reference methods and documented evidence.
