Coal Mine Methane and Spontaneous Combustion Management

Equips coal mining officials with practical methods for detecting, monitoring and controlling methane and spontaneous combustion hazards in South African collieries. Participants learn gas monitoring strategies, sealing practices and heating detection techniques to prevent the ignitions and underground fires that have caused major incidents in the coalfields.

What you will be able to do

  • Explain the behaviour of methane and coal self heating in underground workings.
  • Design gas monitoring and sampling strategies for coal mining sections.
  • Interpret gas readings and ratios to detect early stage heatings.
  • Apply sealing, inertisation and ventilation controls to manage hazards.
  • Establish trigger action response plans for gas and heating events.
  • Coordinate response to spontaneous combustion incidents underground.
