Building a Skills Matrix for Operational and Shop Floor Teams

A skills matrix makes visible who can do what across a team, exposing single points of failure and guiding training and shift planning. This practical course shows HR and operational supervisors how to define competencies, assess proficiency and use the matrix to build a flexible, multi skilled workforce. Examples are drawn from manufacturing, warehousing and utility operations across Africa.

What you will be able to do

  • Define the critical skills and competencies for a team.
  • Set clear proficiency levels that supervisors can assess.
  • Build a skills matrix that is easy to read and maintain.
  • Identify skill gaps and single points of failure.
  • Use the matrix to plan training and cover shifts.
  • Keep the matrix current as people and processes change.
