Blasting and Explosives Management

Every blast carries risk that good planning contains and poor planning releases. Drilling and blasting for surface and underground operations is examined, from blast design and initiation systems to fragmentation, flyrock control, and the magazine and handling duties that South African mining law places on the people in charge.

What you will be able to do

  • Explain how explosives release energy and how that energy breaks rock.
  • Design a blast round matching burden, spacing and timing to the geology.
  • Select initiation systems and detonators suited to surface or underground work.
  • Apply controls that limit flyrock, ground vibration and airblast near people and structures.
  • Manage explosives storage, transport and reconciliation against the Mine Health and Safety Act.
  • Investigate misfires and blast incidents and record the corrective actions taken.

Who should attend

Shift supervisors, mine planners, rock engineering staff and safety officers working around drilling and blasting. The role of blaster in charge legally requires a blasting certificate of competency, and this course supports the underlying knowledge rather than the statutory assessment.
