Battery Electric Vehicle and Underground Fleet Electrification Safety

Prepares mine operations and engineering teams for the safe adoption of battery electric vehicles and fleet electrification in African underground and surface mines. The programme covers lithium battery hazards, charging bay design, thermal runaway response and the ventilation and fire risk changes that electrification brings. It reflects the shift many operations are making to reduce diesel particulate exposure and energy costs.

What you will be able to do

  • Explain the hazards of high voltage battery systems and stored electrical energy.
  • Assess thermal runaway and battery fire risks and plan response measures.
  • Design safe charging bays, swap stations and isolation procedures.
  • Adapt ventilation and fire strategy for electrified underground fleets.
  • Establish safe handling, storage and disposal practices for mining batteries.
  • Develop operator and maintenance competencies for electric mining equipment.
