Basic Chromatography and Separation Science

This foundational course introduces the principles behind chromatographic separation before staff move on to technique specific training. Participants cover the theory of stationary and mobile phases, detector types, peak interpretation and common causes of poor separation, building the grounding needed to operate and troubleshoot gas, liquid and ion chromatography systems confidently.

What you will be able to do

  • Explain the fundamental principles of chromatographic separation.
  • Describe the role of stationary phases, mobile phases and detectors.
  • Identify factors that influence resolution, retention time and peak shape.
  • Interpret basic chromatograms to assess separation quality.
  • Recognise common causes of poor peak shape and baseline drift.
  • Relate chromatography theory to practical operation of laboratory instruments.
