Autonomous and Remote Controlled Mining Equipment Safety

Introduces the safety and operational disciplines needed as African mines deploy autonomous haulage, tele remote loaders and remotely operated drilling. Participants learn to manage the new human and machine interaction risks, exclusion zones and control room responsibilities that automation creates. The programme uses examples from mechanised gold, copper and platinum operations adopting remote and autonomous technology.

What you will be able to do

  • Describe autonomous, tele remote and semi autonomous mining technologies and their risks.
  • Design exclusion zones and access control for autonomous operating areas.
  • Define control room and remote operator roles and safety responsibilities.
  • Manage transitions between manual, remote and autonomous operating modes.
  • Establish interlocks, geofencing and emergency stop protocols.
  • Investigate incidents involving automated and remotely controlled equipment.
