Artisanal and Small Scale Mining Safety and Formalisation

Responds to the growth of artisanal and small scale mining across South Africa and the wider region by building practical safety and formalisation skills. Participants examine common hazards such as unsupported excavations, mercury exposure and unsafe explosives handling, and explore pathways toward safer, more legitimate small scale operations that protect workers and communities.

What you will be able to do

  • Describe the safety and health hazards common in small scale mining.
  • Apply basic ground control and excavation safety in small operations.
  • Reduce mercury and chemical exposure in small scale processing.
  • Promote safe handling and storage of explosives and equipment.
  • Explain formalisation pathways and their safety benefits.
  • Engage mining communities on safer working practices.
