Acid Mine Drainage Prevention and Treatment Management

Tackles acid mine drainage, one of the most serious long term environmental liabilities facing African mining, particularly gold and coal operations. Participants learn to predict acid generation, prevent it at source and design treatment for affected water. The programme links geochemistry, water management and regulatory obligations into a practical management approach.

What you will be able to do

  • Explain the geochemistry of acid rock and acid mine drainage generation.
  • Predict acid generation potential using static and kinetic testing.
  • Apply source control measures for waste rock, tailings and pit water.
  • Select and manage active and passive treatment options.
  • Monitor water quality and interpret results against compliance limits.
  • Plan long term drainage management through operations and closure.
