Sustainable and Green Building Practices

This course examines practical approaches to designing, constructing and operating buildings that reduce energy consumption, water use and environmental impact in the South African context. Participants review passive design principles, green building rating frameworks, energy and water efficient technologies, and the business case for sustainable retrofits, with attention to load shedding resilience and material sourcing across the region.

What you will be able to do

  • Explain passive design principles that reduce heating, cooling and lighting loads in buildings.
  • Compare green building rating frameworks used in South African commercial and residential projects.
  • Evaluate energy efficient and renewable technologies suited to load shedding conditions.
  • Assess water efficient fittings, greywater systems and rainwater harvesting options for new developments.
  • Select sustainable and locally sourced building materials that reduce embodied carbon.
  • Build a business case for green retrofits on existing commercial buildings.
