Road Pavement Design, Layerworks and Materials Selection

A road is only as good as the layers hidden beneath its surface, and premature failure usually starts in the pavement structure rather than the seal. This course covers how flexible pavements are designed, how each layer performs and how to select and compact materials on site. It draws on the design catalogue approaches and gravel resources common to road building across the region.

What you will be able to do

  • Explain how a flexible pavement carries and spreads traffic loads.
  • Interpret pavement design catalogues and layer specifications.
  • Select and classify subgrade, subbase and base materials.
  • Apply stabilisation options for marginal local materials.
  • Supervise placing, moisture control and layer compaction.
  • Apply layerworks testing and acceptance on site.
