Retaining Walls and Earth Retention Systems Construction

Sloping and constrained sites across the continent demand reliable earth retention, and a failed retaining structure endangers lives as well as budgets. This course covers the construction and supervision of common retaining wall systems. It links basic earth pressure principles to practical control of drainage, backfill and reinforcement so that walls perform for their design life.

What you will be able to do

  • Explain earth pressure concepts that govern retaining wall behaviour.
  • Compare gravity, cantilever, gabion and reinforced soil systems.
  • Supervise excavation, foundations and reinforcement for walls.
  • Control backfill placement, compaction and drainage provision.
  • Recognise warning signs of movement and distress.
  • Manage temporary support and safety during construction.
