Respirable Silica Dust Control in Quarrying and Construction

Cutting, grinding, crushing and drilling of stone, concrete and sand releases fine respirable crystalline silica that scars the lungs and drives silicosis, a disease well documented across the region's quarries and building sites. This course moves teams beyond dust masks toward engineering control of the dust at source. Participants learn to assess tasks, apply water suppression and extraction, and confirm that controls are working.

What you will be able to do

  • Explain how respirable silica is generated and why it damages the lungs.
  • Identify high exposure tasks in quarrying, cutting, drilling and finishing work.
  • Apply water suppression and on tool extraction to control dust at source.
  • Specify respiratory protection where engineering controls are not enough.
  • Plan exposure monitoring and interpret the results against exposure limits.
  • Set up health surveillance and record keeping for exposed workers.
