Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment

Most risk assessments are written once, filed, and never used again. The work here is producing baseline, issue based and continuous assessments that supervisors reach for daily, with controls ranked by what genuinely reduces exposure rather than by what is cheapest to write down.

What you will be able to do

  • Distinguish between baseline, issue based and continuous risk assessment and select the right one for each situation.
  • Break any task into steps and identify the hazards hiding in each step.
  • Score risk using likelihood and consequence matrices without inflating or deflating the result.
  • Apply the hierarchy of controls so that elimination and engineering solutions are considered before personal protective equipment.
  • Facilitate a risk assessment session with operators who know the job better than you do.
  • Review and update assessments after incidents, plant changes and new equipment introductions.

Safety officers, health and safety representatives, engineering supervisors, production supervisors and quality managers who lead or contribute to risk assessments. Contractor site agents responsible for method statements will also benefit.
